Le piante madri sono state rinvenute a Pieve S.Stefano (AR) e Verghereto (FO). Non se ne conosce l’origine, ma veniva coltivata nelle zone di alta collina di queste zone, in piante singole. Nella zona di diffusione ne sono rimasti pochissimi esemplari. L’albero è mediamente vigoroso, rustico, a portamento assurgente e mediamente produttivo. La tipica colorazione rossastra del frutto è diffusa anche sui rami di un anno e sulle foglie giovani.
Il frutto è medio piccolo (gr. 110-130), di forma ovoidale molto corta, a peduncolo corto e grosso. La cavità calicina è piccola e poco profonda. La buccia è mediamente spessa, di colore verde omogeneo, con piccole lenticelle rugginose.
La polpa ha un caratteristico colore rosa e la sede dei semi è di colore rosso intenso; succosa e molto zuccherina, è di ottimo sapore. Viene raccolta nella seconda metà di agosto, è da consumo immediato, essendo poco resistente ai trasporti e alle manipolazioni. Dalla sua particolare colorazione viene anche il nome Cocomerina.
He mother plants were recovered in the area of Pieve Santo Stefano (Arezzo) and Verghereto (Forli’). Its origin is unknown but individual plants used to be cultivated in high hills areas. In the area of propagation only a few specimen are left. The tree is moderately vigorous, hardy and with compressed habit. It is moderately productive. The typical reddish color of the fruit is also on the one-year old branches and the young leaves. The fruit is a medium-small size, ovoid and very short in shape. The stem is short and thick. The calyx is small and not too deep. The skin is of medium thickness, an even green colour with small russeted lenticels. The flesh is typically pink and the seed-bearing ovary is deep red; it is a juicy and very sugary pear with a very good flavor. It is harvested during the second half of August, it is suitable for fresh eating given that it is perishable and does not travel well. Cocomerina (little watermelon) - the other name under which this variety it is also known - derives from this fruit’s special coloring.
